R&D Intern

Lucigen seeks an enthusiastic intern to support its research and development team through year's end. This position will primarily handle preparation of general-use laboratory materials, such as media, solutions, and glassware. Additional responsibilities for the position include:

  • Assist senior scientist with project work where PCR, DNA cloning, colony screening, DNA isolation, and restriction mapping skills are utilized
  • Equipment calibration and maintenance
  • Data management and record keeping
  • Product labeling
  • Dispensing and packaging
  • Other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate for this position will currently be pursuing an associate degree in a life-sciences-related discipline or have related experience. Additional requirements include:

  • A "team first" approach with flexibility and ability to change tasks frequently
  • PCR, DNA cloning, colony screening, DNA isolation, and restriction mapping skills
  • Strong time management, written and verbal communication skills
  • A strong commitment to quality and continuous improvement
  • Ability to follow an SOP and maintain a lab notebook
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory equipment, with the ability to problem solve and multi-task
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), e-mail and use of the Internet
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand 6-8 hours per day

Key Account Manager

Lucigen seeks a creative and experienced key account manager to drive significant business growth through the sale of Lucigen’s products to life science companies in the assigned region. As a technical subject matter expert, this position will serve as liaison with our external customers and be responsible for coordination of all partnership activities in the assigned region (West Coast). Additional responsibilities for the position include:

  • Identify new bulk, OEM, and custom business opportunities and engage all necessary stakeholders to negotiate long-term supply agreements in the assigned region
  • Drive plans in collaboration with Technical Support, Production, Sales and Marketing for key accounts in the assigned region that reflects Lucigen’s corporate initiatives
  • Understand customer operations, current and future needs, buying behaviors, competitive factors, and OEM opportunities to develop and implement strategic account plans to significantly increase revenues, profits, and customer satisfaction leveraging Lucigen’s OEM capabilities
  • Develop comprehensive pricing strategy to reflect value delivered while growing revenues and profit
  • Develop and nurture long-term strategic relationships with customers to enable continued collaborations
  • Build partnerships by supporting and developing strong relationships with existing and prospective customers in the assigned region
  • Define and track metrics that measure successful sales performance of key accounts in the assigned region
  • Provide monthly report to supervisor on key accounts’ performance, opportunities, and sales funnel
  • Monitor the competition and report important activities (technical developments, trends within key accounts, seminars, training sessions, etc.) back to Lucigen
  • Provide Marketing and R&D with feedback to consider adoption of new products, technologies, or services that will benefit Lucigen’s business efforts
  • Understand and comply with ethical, legal and regulatory requirements applicable to our business

This position requires a B.S. or B.A. (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred) degree in a life sciences-related discipline. Additional requirements include:

  • Understanding of genomics, proteomics, and molecular biology products in general
  • Knowledge to clearly discuss fundamental theory and principles of experimental design, techniques, and results
  • Ability to provide information back to the customer in a helpful, courteous, positive and professional manner
  • Minimum of 3 years’ lab experience with proven knowledge and understanding of molecular biology, cell biology and related fields
  • Minimum of 2 years’ previous experience working with customers in sales environment and/or marketing, business development, technical service or similar position, 3+ years’ outside sales experience preferred
  • Sales experience in research reagents to academic, industrial and pharmaceutical customers preferred
  • OEM sales, sales management, business development and/or marketing experience preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and listening skills; previous experience giving oral presentations, teaching or training other scientist preferred
  • Strong commitment to customer service and flexible to accommodate unexpected work changes
  • Highly driven, independent worker with a strong motivation to succeed; effective negotiator and facilitator

Director of Research & Development (R&D)

Lucigen seeks an experienced and innovative director of research and development (R&D) to join its growing team. This position is responsible for the overall leadership and hands-on management and supervision of the company’s R&D team. Additional duties include:

  • In cooperation with Marketing and other senior management, establishes the areas of scientific focus for the company in line with the strategic plan
  • Working with other senior management, plays a number of key roles in the successful growth of the company, including opportunity analyses, successful product development, and setting company research goals and the plans to achieve those goals
  • Initiates research projects/programs aimed at growing the business, improving operating efficiencies, and meeting quality objectives 
  • With a priority of meeting customer needs, works closely with others to achieve short-term and long-term product development goals and objectives on time
  • Responsible for developing the annual departmental budget and operating to the budget
  • Provides day-to-day initiative, leadership, and general management within the research and development areas
  • Provides timely, accurate, and complete reports on research and development projects and on opportunity analysis as required by management
  • Spearheads the development, communication, and implementation of effective product growth strategies and quality improvement initiatives
  • Responsible for alignment of the company’s SBIR grant program with business strategies, as well as overseeing grant submissions and compliance with grant requirements on behalf of the company
  • Attracts, recruits, and retains required members of the R&D team not currently in place; provides mentoring to subordinates
  • Fosters a success-oriented, accountable, and quality-focused environment within the company
  • Provides technical representation for the company with clients, investors, and business partners
  • Complies with all federal and state laws, as well as the Lucigen quality system

This position requires a Ph.D. degree in a life science field and a minimum of 10 years’ experience in biotechnology at leading academic and industrial laboratories, or a Master’s degree in a life science field and a minimum of 20 years’ experience in biotechnology at leading academic and industrial laboratories. Additional requirements include:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of NGS platforms, applications, and data analysis
  • A track record of outstanding success with 10+ years’ experience in scientific management
  • Proven success in managing and developing people, group problem solving, and customer relationships
  • Good working knowledge of the requirements of an ISO quality system
  • Ability to formulate clear value and economic benefit statements, good problem solver, strong economic thinker, technical integrator
  • Exceptional organizational and oral/written communication skills
  • Strong communications and PC skills (proficiency in Microsoft Office products and spreadsheet experience)
  • Personal history of good judgment and stable temperament with rational core beliefs: integrity, responsibility, and win/win world view
  • A strong commitment to quality and continuous improvement
